WHY ARE WE MOVING TO DUPR?
We have been looking for a consistent, reliable rating system and that is why we decided to transition to DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating). It's flexible and fair way to assess skill levels, DUPR rates players based on who they play and the outcomes, not just wins and losses.
1. More Accurate Player Ratings
DUPR’s algorithm considers various factors such as the skill level of opponents and the game score, not just wins and losses. This creates a more nuanced rating, especially beneficial for players who often play with or against competitors of different skill levels. For example, narrowly losing to a high-ranked player can still positively impact your DUPR rating, reflecting competitive play rather than just outcomes.
2. Encourages Competitive Play Across Levels
With DUPR, players feel freer to play across skill levels since close games against stronger players can improve their rating. This dynamic reduces the fear of dropping points and encourages competitive, challenging matches, leading to a more inclusive and varied pickleball experience.
3. Flexible for All Formats and Ages
DUPR works across doubles, singles, and even mixed doubles games and is flexible for any age group, making it versatile for pickleball enthusiasts. Whether you’re a junior player or a senior, your DUPR score adjusts to reflect your performance regardless of your format, giving everyone a chance for an accurate rating.
Challenges:
1. Requires Frequent Game Reporting
To keep a current and accurate DUPR rating, players must consistently log their games, which can feel tedious over time. For those who play recreationally and don’t want to record each match, keeping an accurate rating might be challenging, potentially leading to rating discrepancies. This is why we will be running more DUPR events.
2. Subject to Variability Based on Opponents
DUPR relies heavily on opponent strength, so your rating may fluctuate based on who you play against. If your usual partners or competitors don’t have solid, consistent ratings, it may impact the accuracy of your own DUPR score. This reliance can sometimes feel unfair if you’re regularly playing against players with inconsistent ratings.
3. Potential for Rating Inflation - Rating Squatters*
In some cases, especially if players are selective about the games they report, there’s potential for “rating inflation,” where players carefully curate their matches to boost their ratings. While this isn’t a flaw exclusive to DUPR, it can lead to inconsistent ratings that may not reflect a player’s true skill level across the board. This is why playing in our DUPR leagues will give you an accurate rating over time.
DUPR is an innovative step forward in standardizing pickleball ratings, bringing fairer scoring and encouraging competitive play. Yet, as with any rating system, it has its challenges. While DUPR rewards skill development and performance consistency, it also requires active maintenance and transparency. Another case for playing in DUPR leagues.
If you’re serious about advancing your game, DUPR offers a promising system to track your progress and challenge yourself against a range of opponents. Just remember, every rating system has its quirks, but the real value lies in how much it pushes you to keep improving.
Don't Be A Squatter!
Rating Squatters are players who artificially maintain an overinflated DUPR rating by selectively reporting matches, avoiding tough competition, or outright refusing to play games that could jeopardize their standing. Instead of letting their rating reflect their true skill level, they "squat" on a high number, often to secure spots in higher-level tournaments, gain social status, or simply avoid the ego hit of a declining rating. This practice undermines the integrity of the system, making it harder for legitimate competitors to get accurate matchups. While some may claim they’re just being strategic, in reality, a stagnant rating isn’t proof of skill—it’s proof of avoidance.
"Play for the love of the game, seek out competitive matches that challenge you, and let your rating be a reflection of growth, not protection."
Our Transition Experience - FAQ
🧠 DUPR FAQ
❓ What is a DUPR rating?
DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It’s the most accurate and trusted global rating system in pickleball. It tracks match results from recreational games, leagues, and tournaments to calculate your skill level – all on a universal scale from 2.0 to 8.0.
❓ Why is my initial DUPR rating so low?
Great question – and you're not alone! Every player starts with a provisional rating of 3.50 when they first create a DUPR account. Once you play your first DUPR-rated match, your rating will start to adjust based on:
The rating of your opponents
The score differential (a close match vs. a blowout)
Your reliability rating (how many matches you've played)
Don’t read too much into your first few matches – early ratings are provisional and fluctuate a lot. As you play more matches, your DUPR becomes more accurate and meaningful. Keep playing!
❓ What is a Provisional vs. Reliable DUPR rating?
Provisional Rating = fewer than 5 matches. These ratings fluctuate a lot.
Reliable Rating = after 5+ matches, DUPR is more confident in your skill level.
The more games you play (especially against different skill levels), the more accurate your rating becomes.
❓ How can I improve my DUPR rating?
Play more DUPR-rated matches
Play with and against different partners and opponents
Track your wins/losses and score differentials
Avoid stressing over early matches – consistency over time is key
❓ How do I create a DUPR account?
Go to www.dupr.com
Click “Sign Up” (top right)
Enter your info (name, email, city, etc.)
Use the same name and email address that you use on GPN (Global Pickleball Network)
❓ How do I link my DUPR account to my GPN profile?
Log in to your Global Pickleball Network (GPN) account
Go to your Profile Settings
Look for the field to enter your DUPR ID or email address
Make sure your name and email match exactly in both systems
Once linked, any GPN matches tagged as DUPR events will automatically be submitted.
If you have issues, email us and we’ll help you get connected.
Do all GPN matches count toward DUPR?
Not automatically. Only matches that are part of designated DUPR-rated events (leagues, tournaments, or organized DUPR games) count toward your rating. These are clearly marked on the schedule or announced in advance.
